David Arkenstone

After coming to California from outside of Chicago at age 10, David Arkenstone immersed himself in all the music he could find. Spending high school and college in various bands and performance groups, he then criss-crossed the country several times playing popular music. He finally settled down to concentrate on developing his own sound, and when computers and instruments could finally communicate to each other, David knew his time had come. He could now hear a good portion of what he could imagine.

“Technology has produced some wonderful tools for making music. The computer allows me to fully orchestrate my pieces and really fine tune them,” said David.

David’s music has recently been described as Cinematic new age rock. “It is sometimes difficult to categorize my music and this is a term I can live with,” David responded.

“I enjoy bringing many different influences together in my music,” he continues. World music, classical rock, and new age are some of the styles I draw from and enjoy weaving into an entertaining and adventurous whole.

“I have always loved the sound of the orchestra. Now I believe I have refined a wonderful blend combining the best elements of the acoustic world, with the electronic world.”

When not chained to his Apple Macintosh composing, David likes to play baseball, create 3-D art projects, and write screenplays.

Suzanne Ciani

Suzanne Ciani is a pioneer in electronic music and one of the few women to blaze a trail in the genre. She received classical music training at Wellesley College and obtained her M.A. in music in 1970 at University of California at Berkeley where she met and was influenced by the idiosyncratic synthesizer designer Don Buchla. In 1974 she formed her own company, Ciani/Musica, and, using a Buchla Analog Modular Synthesizer, began scoring television commercials for Coca-Cola, Merrill Lynch, AT&T and General Electric. Besides music, her specialty was reproducing sound effects on the synthesizer that recording engineers had found difficult to record properly; if you heard a bottle of Coke being opened and poured on the radio or on television during the late ’70s, you were probably hearing Ciani’s work. Such was the demand for her services that at one point she was doing up to fifty sessions a week. Her sound effects also appeared in video games (the pinball game Xenon even featured her voice).

Besides the commercials, Ciani scored the Lily Tomlin movie The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and Mother Teresa, as well as scored for the TV daytime serial (“soap opera”) One Life to Live.

In 1977, Suzanne Ciani provided the sound effects for Meco’s disco version of the Star Wars soundtrack, which was certified platinum. In 1982 she began to record a series of albums in the new age genre, characterized by a mix of electronic and traditional instruments.

Ann Sweeten

Ann Sweeten displayed an early interest in the keyboard, and her mother gave her a Hammond organ when she was six. Three years later, she received a Baldwin piano for Christmas. She studied privately with David Sokolof, then attended Smith College, from which she graduated cum laude with a degree in foreign languages. Next, she took vocal lessons and founded a rock band called Fall Out. After two years, she returned to academia, attending the Boston Conservatory where she studied music, acting, singing, dance, and musical theater. She moved to New York, joined the actors union, and began getting parts in stage musicals, while also playing piano in clubs and restaurants. Starting in 1997, she began releasing new age piano albums on her own Orange Band record label. Prism was followed by Passage, Christmas Presence, Reflections, and Sapphire Days. Both Reflections and Sapphire Days were moderate hits at modern instrumental radio in North America. A Place in the Sun followed in 2005. Sweeten is also a voting member of The Recording Academy and a ASCAP Popular Awards Recipient for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Joe Bongiorno

“Glass of wine & candlelight music”… is the best way to describe the gentle, flowing melodies of Seattle based solo pianist/composer Joe Bongiorno. After abandoning his classical training as a child, Joe returned to the piano is his late 20’s and discovered a wonderful channel of peace & emotional release. His 4th CD “Mesmerized” was released in Dec. 2009. Critics say “Its gentle flow casts a magical spell that draws you in and wraps your mind in unspeakable beauty”. Joe’s 2007 CD “Somewhere Within” received immediate acclaim and found its way onto radio playlists all over the world. It was nominated for Best Solo Piano CD of 2007 by Whisperings Solo Piano Radio & Kathy Parson’s Mainly Piano, as well as becoming a TOP 100 New Age Album at iTunes. All of Joe’s solo piano recordings are self produced at his Piano Haven Studio in Seattle, fulfilling his dream of producing world class recordings from his home, whenever the inspiration hits.

Paul Cardall

The three time Billboard charting recording artist Paul Cardall has inspired people worldwide. Not only as a songwriter, composer, and performer, but he has been successful running his own independent record label Stone Angel Music for more than 10 years.

As a teenager, Cardall discovered his gift of music. After a friend’s tragic death, he found solace through the family piano. Over the next several years, Cardall spent hours writing songs, without much formal training.

Cardall was also busy learning he had a gift of working with people. After serving a 2-year mission for his Church he was recruited by Salt Lake Community College with a full ride leadership scholarship. A copy made its way to #1 New York Times best-selling author Richard Paul Evans, writer of The Christmas Box.

Interview with Laura Sullivan

What kind of music do you like to create the most? I compose mostly for the piano and other acoustic accompanying instruments and lately I have also been including vocals on some selections. I like to play and create music for which I feel some personal connection. My latest album, Feast of Joy and Love, features my vocal debut recording of romantic and emotional music. My forthcoming album, Close to Home, will be released soon. This album will include some of my favorite songs since my childhood, such as The Water is Wide, Si Beag Si Mor, Shenandoah, Simple Gifts, and She Moved through the Fair.

What are some of your musical influences? Easy Listening music favorites Enya and Yanni, as well as New Age piano greats Liz Story, George Winston, Danny Wright and David Lanz.

Can you tell me about your childhood and what happened that influenced your music? I grew up on a farm in Northern California near the foothills of Mt. Lassen. My parents were a big influence on me because they were creative and took us on lots of adventures and my mom happened to be a children’s book author (Carol Purdy, who is best known for her books Least of All, Mrs. Merriwether’s Musical Cat, and Iva Dunnit and the Big Wind.) She was my first piano teacher and started teaching me to play when I was around four years old.
I used to enjoy playing around on the piano and making up songs and before long I had a whole notebook full of them. When I was in college I started teaching musical theater and developed my own company called “Star Company”. I wrote 6 musicals for this troupe of children’s performers and we produced the shows ourselves.

Can we hear your music on the radio? My music charts on radio, including satellite stations Sirius, XM Radio, and Music Choice’s Soundscapes and it can be heard on various stations internationally listed on New Age Reporter. I am also a member of the contemporary piano artist collective Whisperings, founded by composer and pianist, David Nevue. Other artists in this organization include David Lanz, Wayne Gratz, Robin Spielberg, and Suzanne Ciani. This artist community promotes its collective through its own radio station and regional concerts. Whisperings can be heard on iTunes radio and Live355.

Where can we find your CDs? I have my own record label, Sentient Spirit Records, on which I release my music which I would classify as of the Contemporary Classical and New Age music genres. Sentient Spirit Records is distributed on Amazon, CDBaby and through IODA, among other outlets, to iTunes and other digital download sites. Some of my albums are also signed to the record labels North Star Music and Orange Music (of Asia). North Star Music distributes to retail stores throughout the US and you can find my music in Asia on the Orange Music label at Sembawang Music Centre outlets.

Where are some of the other places your music is played? I’ve performed at a number of shows where my music has been discovered by those in the healing arts. I’m delighted to hear from those who have said the soft melody in each of my songs lends itself well to massage music and spa music. My music has been included in television, feature film scores, and a variety of other media soundtracks. I was a featured artist in a program produced by jazz legend Stanley Clarke called Music Across America.

What are some things about growing up on the farm that influenced your projects? I think growing up in the environment I did with the incredible views of the mountains and so much life all around, I developed an awe of our environment and it continues to move me. My release, Pianoscapes for the Trails of North America, includes a song inspired by each of the National Scenic Trails, such as the Appalachian, Continental Divide, and the Pacific Crest. We put blue spruce tree seeds inside each of the CD jewel cases that listeners can plant.

Along the view of the foothills where I lived there is a rock wall built by ancient Chinese settlers. Also the location of our old farm house was on the land where Ishi, the last surviving member of the Yahi-Yana tribe used to live. We also lived close to Mt. Shasta which is legendary for being a sacred and mystical place. Knowing about these things growing up, I became fascinated with spiritual places and that influenced the creation of my album Mystical America.

Who are some of the people that have influenced your music in your personal adult life? I’m lucky enough to have had the chance to work with renowned guitarist Chris Camozzi (who has appeared with artists Jeff Lorber, Michael Bolton, Maria Carey, Barbara Streisand, and many others). He produced both Pianoscapes for the Trails of North America and Mystical America, and also contributed his electric and acoustic guitar talents to those albums. He introduced me to wonderful musicians who play on those albums, Mary Pitchford on violin, Diane Grubbe on contemporary and wooden flute, and Scott Fuller who does the orchestral strings.

I’m also passionate about studying Non Violent Communication, also called Compassionate Communication, and strive to live NVC as a spiritual path. Non Violent Communication was developed by Marshall Rosenberg and is based on the principles of non-violence such as that which is integral to Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa. I am currently working on an album of music for children based on the principles of NVC.

What else do you enjoy doing besides making music? I call the beautiful Bay Area of California home and there are so many wonderful things to do here in the great outdoors with the ocean close by and the redwoods literally out my backdoor. I love spending as much time as I can playing with my family and I enjoy cooking (I’m not that great, but getting better!) and taking long walks.

Jon Dahlander

Jon Dahlander can’t walk by a piano. He has to play it. It’s why he’s been kicked out of countless hotel lobbies, bars and restaurants throughout his life.
“To me, every piano has a story—where it was made, who made it, the kind of shape it’s in, who played it before and what it sounds like now, particularly with one of my songs,” says Jon. “So, if I see a lonely piano, I have to play it. It’s like finding a new friend with a common interest.”
It’s why Jon’s series of piano solos isn’t morose or mundane. These are pieces of music that bask in the joy of being played.

In 1995, Jon signed on with Dallas-based Carpe Diem Records and his debut was the label’s fastest-ever selling debut.
1997 brought the release of Piano Landscapes v.2, a CD inspired by a trip Jon took to Europe after studying the piano works of Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie.
V.3 was released one week before Jon and his wife Heidi gave birth to a special needs child named Jared, effectively sidelining his recording career for a few years.
Since then, while he has not recorded any new music, Jon has played in some of the top venues in the Dallas area, including the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the Dallas Museum of Art and the Sammons Center, where he headlined a concert for a Dallas arts organization called Inspirata.

In 2006, Jon is lending new piano material to a project called Luminas, which is designed to assist cancer patients through the use of guided imagery.
